  David walked over to her. It was touching to see how he tried to walk like a tough guy while at the same time trying to get to her as quickly as possible. He leaned over and sat down on one knee in front of her.

  “There’s a party tonight at the girls’ campsite.” His eyes sparkled with excitement.

  “What time does it finish?”

  “I’m not sure exactly. But I think around twelve o’clock.”

  Heleen though deeply for a moment. She was not crazy about parties held at some strange campsite. She looked past David and saw how the girls were whispering to each other. They were just as nervous as her son. She sighed theatrically and shrugged. He’s almost fifteen, after all, she thought.

  “I trust that you will be home no later than twelve thirty,” she replied with an accommodating smile.

  Because he realized just in time that the two girls were still keeping eye on him, David suppressed his spontaneous happy reaction. Instead, he slowly stood up, put up his thumb on semi-casually, and gave her a wink.

  “Thanks, Mom.”
